To serve the United States' huge Hispanic population, Desert Mountain Media is launching a line of acclaimed Spanish-language films on DVD.
The first, just issued, is Cilantro y Perejil (Recipes to Stay Together), a 1995 film that won nine Ariel Awards, Mexico's equivalent of the Oscars. Like other films due from Phoenix-based Desert Mountain Media, the comedy has been restored and remastered.
The Latin Cinema Collection's next two releases will be El Imperio de la Fortuna (The Realm of Fortune) and Angel de Fuego (Angel of Fire), both due Jan. 7.
"For the most part these films have not had a video release in America -- perhaps a limited release only," Leslie Haas, president of Desert Mountain Media, said during a recent Houston visit. "If they have, they've been English-dubbed, with Spanish subtitles, not Spanish-language like our releases."
Most such titles will be on DVD only. You won't find an English-language track, just optional English subtitles. Menus will be in Spanish and English.
"Some will also be on VHS, but with the restoration work we've done, DVD is the place to showcase that," Haas said. "Besides, the future is DVD."
She said about 40 films in the collection will be issued in the next year. They will "run the gamut" from romantic comedies to art-house dramas, with many countries represented. Years of origin will range from the '70s to the present.
"For the most part they'll be award-winning films -- films of the highest echelon -- which is why we're taking time to restore them," Haas said.
Such films will be offered nationwide by mass-market retailers, both in stores and online.
